Book cover design for Izyaslav & Gertrude

One more project for Harvard Library of Ukrainian Literature. This study focuses on two well-known rulers of Kyivan Rus' King Izyaslav & Queen Gertrude and situates them in a larger context of medieval Europe.

The main motive for the cover was taken from the acient Temple Pendant from 11th-12th century that now located in the Met Museum in New York. As in Byzantium, temple pendants may have been worn next to the face by both the men and the women of Rus. Perhaps it was buried by their owners when the Mongol armies under Batu Khan sacked Kiev in 1240.
